Online Retail Shows Great Gains on Mobile Devices

Using a smartphone or tablet to surf the web and/or access mobile apps has been consistently on the rise over the past two years. According to comScore’s new ‘State of US Online Retail Economy 2012‘ report, online retail, in particular, is a standout performer in the mobile space. Of the nine subcategories measured, which included credit cards, classifieds, travel services, among others, comScore found that all showed significant YOY user increases of at least 36 percent. Online retail, however, which covers everything from general retail like Amazon to high-end retail like Nordstrom as well as specialty sites like Sephora and Zappos, blew away the competition with the greatest gains and a 69 percent uptick.
It’s should be no surprise, then, that comScore also found that 8 percent of all online purchases now occur on a mobile device–a 40 percent increase over this same time last year. Not only are more people switching from regular cell phones to smartphones — or, in many cases, smartphones and tablets — but more people are also using these mobile devices more often. Just as the cell phone has replaced the watch for many young people, the mobile device is increasingly serving as the go-to source for online search and even online purchase. comScore reports that more than half (55 percent) of this country’s 234 million mobile subscribers now access the web via their mobile devices. Judging from this new data, it’s clear that online retail browsing and buying is a significant contributor to that increase.
